Tottenham Hotspur FC in Advanced Negotiations to Secure Liverpool Defender's Services
In a surprising turn of events, Tottenham Hotspur is reportedly in advanced talks to secure the services of Liverpool FC's defender, Andrew Robertson. The Scottish international, who is out of contract in the summer, is eager to gain more playing time ahead of the upcoming World Cup. According to Standard Sport, negotiations between the two clubs are progressing smoothly.
Initially, Tottenham was among the clubs expressing interest in Robertson during the summer when he would have become a free agent. However, the club has decided to expedite their pursuit, recognizing the need for an immediate boost to their squad following Ben Davies' recent ankle injury against West Ham. Davies is unlikely to return to action this season after undergoing ankle surgery.
Robertson, who has started only four Premier League games this season, has faced limited playing time since the arrival of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth in the summer. With Davies' absence, Robertson's experience and leadership in the Premier League could be invaluable to Tottenham's defense.
The 31-year-old will compete with Destiny Udogie for starting positions, allowing Djed Spence more playing time in his preferred right-back role. Additionally, Robertson's status as a homegrown player will be advantageous for Tottenham in the Champions League knockout stage, where they have struggled to meet UEFA squad rule guidelines this season.
In the January transfer window, Tottenham has been active, bringing in Souza and former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid. Souza is eligible to make his debut this weekend against Burnley, provided he receives international clearance in time.
