A Tragic Collision: Elephants and Trains in India
In a heart-wrenching incident, seven elephants met their unfortunate end in a collision with a Delhi-bound train in northeast India. This tragic event occurred early on Saturday, as the train, carrying its passengers, encountered a herd of elephants in the Hojai district of Assam state. The district police chief, VV Rakesh Reddy, confirmed the devastating outcome.
The location of the incident was not a designated elephant corridor, as stated by the Northeast Frontier Railway. The locomotive driver, upon spotting the elephants, attempted to prevent a disaster by applying the emergency brakes. However, the elephants' instinct to flee proved fatal, as they rushed towards the train, leading to a devastating collision.
The collision, which took place at 2:17 a.m. (2047 GMT on Friday), caused the locomotive and five coaches to derail. Miraculously, no human lives were lost in this tragic event. The railway authorities promptly responded, diverting scheduled trains through an alternative route to ensure safety. Restoration works are currently underway to resume regular operations.
