A somber discovery has been made in the search for a Queensland miner who went missing underground. A body has been found in the Curragh coalmine, just one day after a worker was trapped under a collapsed roof.
The tragic incident occurred at the Curragh mine in central Queensland, where a man was working when the roof suddenly collapsed around 3 pm on Friday. Emergency responders bravely ventured into the darkness to locate the missing miner, and sadly, they found only a lifeless body.
The state acting mines minister, Tony Perrett, shared the devastating news, stating, "One worker was safely recovered yesterday, while specialist teams worked tirelessly to stabilize the site and access the second individual. Tragically, that worker could not be saved."
The Curragh Coal Mine, located north of Blackwater and about 200 km west of Rockhampton, has been in operation since 1983. It covers a vast area of approximately 256 square kilometers across two separate mines. Coronado Global Resources has owned the mine since 2018, and their CEO, Douglas Thompson, expressed deep sadness over the incident, offering condolences to the miner's family and colleagues.
Thompson assured that the company is providing support to the contracted mine operator, Mammoth Underground Mine Management, as they collaborate with authorities to investigate the cause of the tragedy. In the meantime, all underground mining operations at the site have been suspended.
In a separate, equally distressing incident, a gold prospector working at a private mine site about 300 km north of Curragh lost his life after being struck by falling rocks. The 58-year-old man was working alone with an excavator at a Mount Britton property when a rock face partially collapsed, causing severe injuries to his leg. Despite the best efforts of emergency responders, the man succumbed to his injuries.
Both incidents serve as a stark reminder of the inherent risks faced by workers in the resources sector. Minister Perrett emphasized the importance of thorough investigations to ensure that such tragedies do not recur. He stated, "Every worker deserves to return home safely, and I expect full and thorough investigations into both incidents to ensure answers are provided and lessons are learned."
As we reflect on these tragic events, it is crucial to remember the families and colleagues of the miners who lost their lives. Their sacrifice should not be forgotten, and we must strive to create safer working conditions in the mining industry.
