O'Hare International Airport's Concourse D: A Sneak Peek at the Future (2026)

New Renderings Unveiled for O'Hare's Concourse D: A Major Expansion Project

O'Hare International Airport is set to undergo a significant transformation with the introduction of Concourse D, a new fly-through video reveals. This ambitious project marks the airport's first major expansion since 2023 and is a crucial phase of the ORDNext initiative, scheduled for completion in 2028. The new concourse will be a game-changer, offering enhanced travel experiences and improved infrastructure.

The design team behind Concourse D comprises renowned firms: SOM, Ross Barney, Arup, and JGMA. Their collaborative efforts have crafted a visually stunning and functional space. Concourse D will be strategically located southwest of the existing Concourse C, connected by an elevated tunnel. At the heart of Concourse D lies 'The Orchard,' a circular lounge area spanning 30,000 square feet, offering a unique blend of dining, retail, and relaxation, paying homage to the airport's historical roots as Orchard Field.

The structure itself is an architectural marvel, boasting a 580,000-square-foot footprint and 19 gates. These gates are designed to accommodate various aircraft sizes, including wide-body planes for long-haul flights. Concourse D will also facilitate international arrivals with a suspended sterile corridor, guiding passengers to a dedicated passport control center, set to be completed as part of the broader project.

One of the standout features is the 40-foot-tall ceilings, supported by intricate branching columns, creating a visually captivating and spacious environment. The south end of the concourse will be adorned with a grand wall of windows, offering breathtaking views of the city to the east. Furthermore, Concourse D will be seamlessly connected to the new Global Terminal and Concourse E through an underground tunnel, enhancing the overall travel experience.

This expansion is particularly significant as O'Hare Airport recently reclaimed its position as the nation's busiest airport by aircraft movements, with a remarkable 857,300 total in 2025. The project also coincides with the intense competition between United and American Airlines, who have recently acquired gates from Spirit, further emphasizing the airport's strategic importance.

Construction commenced in early 2025, focusing on site preparation, underground utilities, and tunneling. Vertical construction is imminent, with equipment already on-site. Additionally, O'Hare Airport is set to award the largest concessions contract in the nation this March, encompassing 110 commercial locations in Terminals 1 and 3. This expansion is a testament to O'Hare's commitment to meeting the growing travel demands and enhancing the overall passenger experience.
