Get Ready for a Game-Changer in Mario Tennis Fever!
When it comes to the Mario Tennis series, I have to admit that it hasn't always captured my enthusiasm. While its contributions to the Mario sports lineup have been commendable, the initial excitement surrounding motion controls in titles like Mario Power Tennis on the Wii has faded over time.
However, following the enthusiastic reception of the Nintendo Switch, the franchise made a comeback with Mario Tennis Aces, which shifted back to a more classic sports game format and even included a story mode. Traditionally, these games haven’t appealed to me much, as they often rely on novelty features that appear every few generations. So, when I received an invitation from Nintendo to attend an exclusive preview event for Mario Tennis Fever, I decided to approach it with an open mind.
What Surprised Me?
To my delight, this new installment is brimming with various game modes, unique courts, and tennis rackets infused with special abilities, creating an experience reminiscent of Mario Party. My hour-and-a-half session barely scratched the surface of what this game has in store!
Game, Set, FEVER!
Right off the bat, the visual appeal of Mario Tennis Fever is stunning. Among the impressive titles we've seen on the Switch 2, this one stands out as one of the most visually captivating first-party offerings from Nintendo. During my initial gameplay, I had the opportunity to engage in single-player matches where I could freely select characters from an extensive roster, along with power rackets that matched. For my first round, I chose Donkey Kong, equipped with his banana racket (yes, you read that right—it's literally a racket made of bananas!).
After going through the tutorials and getting a handle on the Fever Rackets and their power-ups, the pace of my first match was exhilarating. The AI opponents posed a real challenge, which was an unexpected twist. The true fun began when Fever effects were unleashed, creating a whirlwind of excitement along with court-specific elements based on the chosen setting.
Tools of the Trade
Prepare for chaos as fireballs, banana peels, and thumping blocks litter the court, throwing your rhythm off and occasionally causing you to miss crucial shots.
The adventure mode makes a return, featuring a comprehensive single-player campaign. This time, players assume the roles of younger versions of beloved characters like Mario, Luigi, Waluigi, and Wario, navigating a Super Mario-style map filled with diverse challenges and abilities that allow them to regain their adult forms.
A new addition is the Fever rackets. All options were unlocked during this preview, and once you build up your fever gauge, you can unleash some wild gameplay tactics that might give you an advantage—or sometimes lead to losing that pivotal point. My favorite was the Bullet Bill racket, especially effective during doubles matches. With four characters on the court, the action becomes delightfully chaotic, bringing forth the whimsical fun that fans of the series adore.
Different court types add variety, with designs inspired by various Nintendo games, such as the Donkey Kong Jungle Court and the Wonder Court, inspired by the latest Super Mario Bros. title, among others.
While motion controls are available, they feel more like an optional feature rather than a necessity. In "Swing Mode," you strap the Joy-Con to your wrist to simulate swinging a tennis racket. Your character moves automatically, and while the responsiveness isn’t perfect at all times, it adds a layer of enjoyment reminiscent of Mario Party.
Final Thoughts
Overall, Mario Tennis Fever appears to be a significant leap forward for the franchise. With a robust roster of 28 playable characters, the innovative Fever rackets, and breathtaking graphics showcased on the Nintendo Switch 2, I am eagerly anticipating the chance to pick up my racket again and create more delightful chaos when Mario Tennis Fever launches on February 12, 2026.
