Planning a Parisian getaway? Finding the perfect hotel can make or break your trip, and the Hyatt's Hotel du Louvre in Paris is a strong contender. But is it worth your precious travel points and hard-earned cash? Let's dive in! This review offers a glimpse into this historic hotel, exploring its charm, suites, and overall experience.
For this trip, I was checking out new hotels in Paris, including the SAX Paris, Hilton LXR, which didn't quite hit the mark for me. But the Hotel du Louvre, part of Hyatt's Unbound Collection, caught my attention. I booked it using 35,000 World of Hyatt points, a significant saving compared to the cash rate of around €600.
My stay at the Hotel du Louvre was enjoyable, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. It exudes a strong sense of place, embodying the essence of a classic Parisian hotel. However, it didn't quite have that 'wow' factor, and it wouldn't be my first choice in Paris. In fact, the Park Hyatt Paris Vendome, being only slightly more expensive when redeeming points, would be my preference.
Here's what we'll cover:
- Hotel du Louvre's historical significance and ambiance.
- The hotel's suite offerings and comfort levels.
- The quality of service and overall experience.
- My final verdict.
A Journey Through Time: History and Ambiance
One of the most remarkable aspects of Paris is the history embedded in its architecture, and the Hotel du Louvre is no exception. Commissioned by Napoleon III in 1855 as the first luxury 'grand hotel' in Paris, it's a building steeped in history. Though the location was moved across the square in 1887, the building still stands strong after nearly 140 years. The hotel's central location near the Louvre Museum is a major plus.
As you step inside, you're immediately transported. From the original lobby columns to the vintage elevators and the elegant lobby bar, the hotel embodies the spirit of old-world Parisian hotels.
Suite Dreams: Comfort and Space
One of the Hotel du Louvre's standout features is its accommodation breakdown. Out of 164 rooms, 57 are suites. This high ratio of suites is excellent for those hoping for an upgrade.
As a lifetime World of Hyatt Globalist member, I was upgraded to a Louvre Suite. It was incredibly spacious, with a vast living room. However, while the suite was nice, I found the design somewhat bland and a little worn. It felt like standard hotel furniture had been placed in a suite with great potential. The pictures online looked more appealing than the reality.
Service with a Smile: The Hotel Experience
I found the service at the Hotel du Louvre to be friendly. This is not necessarily a unique feature, as Parisian hotels generally maintain a high standard of service. However, the friendly service deserves a mention, and the hotel delivered on that front.
Beyond the service, the hotel offers a gym, which is a good size for Paris standards. The main restaurant, Brasserie du Louvre, is open all day. While it's not necessarily a 'destination' restaurant, I did enjoy breakfast there. It offered a small but high-quality buffet, along with a selection of a la carte options. The restaurant can get crowded, and the breakfast experience isn't particularly personalized.
The Bottom Line: Is the Hotel du Louvre Right for You?
Hyatt's Hotel du Louvre Paris is a solid choice for World of Hyatt loyalists visiting Paris. Its central location and old-world charm, coupled with a high number of suites, make it a good option, especially if you're hoping for an upgrade. However, the design and amenities don't make it an especially exciting property.
So, if you're looking for a centrally located hotel in Paris, and if a suite or a large room is a priority, this could be a great choice. But if you're redeeming points, I'd recommend the Park Hyatt Paris instead. It's in a different league.
