Dr. George Jebuntie Zaato, a political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, has criticized the Parliament, particularly the Majority Caucus, for their hasty and seemingly biased response to the arrest of Lawyer Martin Kpebu by the OSP. Kpebu, believed to be sympathetic to the NDC, was detained and released after being asked to provide property as a condition for his release.
The arrest sparked intense debate in Parliament, with NDC members condemning the OSP and even calling for the repeal of the office's establishing acts. Dr. Zaato, in a TV3 panel discussion, accused the Majority Caucus of hypocrisy, pointing out their silence when other citizens' rights were abused by the OSP and other agencies.
He questioned the double standards, asking, 'Where is our sense of fairness?' Dr. Zaato emphasized the importance of treating all citizens equally, regardless of their political affiliations. He stated, 'If we are to build a fair society, we must call out wrongdoings consistently, whether they involve Paul, Kpebu, or anyone else.'
Dr. Zaato also condemned the arrest and rights abuse, urging everyone to stand against tyranny, regardless of the individuals involved. He said, 'Tyranny in any form is unacceptable, and threats to human rights anywhere are threats to human rights everywhere.'
The lecturer's comments come as a response to the controversial defense of former President Mahama's 'broken promise' by Kwakye Ofosu, which sparked a strong reaction from netizens.
