Did the Buccaneers really lack the desire to succeed? Fans of the Bucs, like Joe, were left in shock after witnessing the team’s disappointing losses to the Saints, Falcons, Panthers, and Dolphins, which effectively eliminated them from playoff contention this season.
December is typically a critical period in the NFL, when teams are expected to showcase their finest performances and remain fully focused on the implications of each game. Unfortunately, the Bucs seemed to falter during this crucial stretch.
The encounter with the Dolphins stands out as particularly dismal. Facing a rookie quarterback from the seventh round making just his second start, the Dolphins managed to build a 20-10 lead against the Bucs late in the fourth quarter. This was especially surprising given that Miami had just experienced a harsh defeat at the hands of a struggling team the previous week.
At this point, it was clear that the Bucs had hit a low point, and there was plenty of accountability to go around within the team.
Recently, former Bucs star Rob Gronkowski shared his thoughts on SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio, discussing the importance of players who are fiercely determined to win and are willing to tackle the toughest challenges during a game. According to Gronk, having numerous individuals with this mindset is essential for achieving victory.
"There are many players in the NFL who simply want to shine; they desire success without putting in the hard work,” Gronkowski remarked. "They aim for that easy catch—one where they’re wide open and face no contest—so they can score a touchdown. But anyone can achieve that if they’re not being defended."
It’s worth noting that Joe is not criticizing the Bucs’ receiving corps, nor was Gronkowski; however, the future Hall of Fame tight end’s comments led Joe to ponder how many players on the Bucs roster might prefer the path of least resistance. Did this mentality become too prevalent as the season progressed into December?
"When you truly desire success, that’s the key to winning Super Bowls," Gronkowski stated emphatically.
Sadly, the Bucs didn’t project the image of a team eager to win as last season drew to a close. Even head coach Todd Bowles addressed this issue openly during a memorable rant filled with expletives, highlighting the team's shortcomings.
Joe hopes that the intensity of Bowles' message resonates throughout the team and influences their strategy during the upcoming offseason. Clearly, the roster could benefit from an infusion of determination and tenacity.
