A bold move to protect nature: 98.8 hectares of illegal palm oil plantations eradicated!
In a recent joint operation, the Berbak and Sembilang National Park Office took a stand against illegal activities, targeting nearly 99 hectares of encroachment within the park's boundaries. This operation, led by TNBS Head Yunaidi, aimed to safeguard the delicate peat ecosystem and ensure the park's ecological functions remain intact.
The operation, conducted from December 4th to 10th, 2025, focused on the Sungai Rambut Resort area, a protected peat swamp ecosystem. With a team of 51 personnel from various institutions, including law enforcement agencies and local authorities, the mission was a collaborative effort to restore the natural balance.
Using chainsaws and machetes, the team cleared an impressive 98.88 hectares of illegal palm oil plantations. Yunaidi emphasized that this operation was separate from an ongoing legal case involving forestry crimes, ensuring transparency and accuracy in public information.
Berbak and Sembilang National Park is a vital habitat for numerous wildlife species, and the impact of encroachment and land clearing can be devastating. It disrupts the ecosystem's structure and increases the risk of devastating fires.
This security operation is part of the national park's ongoing commitment to protect its precious resources. The TNBS Office expressed gratitude for the cooperation and emphasized the need for continued collaboration to safeguard the conservation area.
But here's where it gets controversial: Should we solely rely on law enforcement to protect our natural habitats, or is there a need for more community involvement and education?
And this is the part most people miss: Indonesia has made significant strides in peatland restoration, with over 5.5 million hectares restored. However, with ongoing challenges like illegal palm oil cultivation, the fight to preserve these ecosystems continues.
