I'm fed up with Android phones that seem to be taking their design cues from iPhones. It's a trend that's been building for a while now, and it's time to call it out.
Let's face it, Apple popularized the flat-edged, curved-corner design with the iPhone 4 back in 2010, and since then, many Android manufacturers have followed suit. But here's where it gets controversial: is this a case of innovation or imitation?
Take a look at the Pixel 10 series, the Samsung Galaxy S25, and the OnePlus 15 - they all have that familiar iPhone-like feel. And it's not just about the aesthetics; it's the overall design language that's being copied.
But why is this happening? Well, some argue that it's a practical choice. Flat frames and rounded corners might make smartphones more repairable, especially with the new EU regulations on device repairability coming into effect soon.
However, I believe there's more to it than just practicality. These designs lack imagination and creativity. Phones with flat frames often feel less ergonomic and can give off a bulky, brick-like impression.
And this is the part most people miss: there are so many other ways to create sleek, repairable designs without copying Apple. Take the HMD Skyline, for example. This 2024 model boasts a unique design with rounded sides and a flat top and bottom, earning it a top repairability score from iFixit.
The Jolla Phone is another great example. With its removable rear cover, battery, and microSD card slot, it offers a fresh take on smartphone design. Even Sony's Xperia 1 VII stands out with its ridged frame.
So, why are larger companies like Google and Samsung sticking to derivative designs? It's time for them to step up and show us what they can do.
There are plenty of alternatives to the flat-edged, curved-corner design. We could see more rounded frames, curved edges, or even smartphones carved from a single block of material.
It's time for Android OEMs to break free from the Apple mold and embrace their creativity. After all, a smartphone's design should be more than just a camera bump.
