Researchers from China conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 89 studies, encompassing data from 116,473 participants. They found that CRE colonization in the gastrointestinal tract is alarmingly common, with a pooled prevalence of 14%. This colonization can lead to serious invasive diseases, especially in critically ill hospital patients, and can persist for months, acting as a reservoir for hospital outbreaks.
The study highlights significant regional variations, with Vietnam, Iran, and India showing the highest CRE colonization rates. The authors emphasize the need for standardized surveillance, particularly in high-risk environments, and targeted infection control strategies to curb the spread. They also call for enhanced molecular monitoring and research to inform public health responses.
Measles Outbreaks: A Growing Concern
Health officials in South Carolina reported eight new measles cases and exposures at four schools, bringing the state's total to 87 cases this year. Most of these cases are linked to an outbreak in the Upstate region. Alarmingly, 77 of the 87 case-patients are unvaccinated, underscoring the importance of vaccination in preventing measles and stopping outbreaks.
