** Prelims: Day 1 (https://swimswam.com/2025-minnesota-invite-day-1-prelims-live-recap/)

The opening evening of finals at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center is set to ignite with exciting races in the women's and men's 200 free relays, 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, and 400 medley relays. Turning back to morning prelims, it was an outstanding start for Cal's Golden Bears.

Cal's talented swimmer Claire Weinstein (https://swimswam.com/bio/claire-weinstein/) and her teammate Ryan Erisman (https://swimswam.com/tag/ryan-erisman/) secured their top spots in the women's and men's 500 free prelims, respectively, positioning them perfectly for tonight's finals.

Mia West (https://swimswam.com/tag/mia-west/) from Cal shattered her personal record in the morning's 200 IM, clocking 1:55.25 and claiming the top seed for the evening showdown. She's got a commanding lead of nearly two and a half seconds over Harvard's Kiley Wilhelm (https://swimswam.com/tag/kiley-wilhelm/), who placed second at 1:57.70.

On the men's side, Cal's Kenneth Barnicle (https://swimswam.com/tag/kenneth-barnicle/) headed up a trio of freshmen from the Golden Bears in the 200 IM prelims. Barnicle touched first in 1:45.42, followed closely by Casper Puggaard (https://swimswam.com/tag/casper-puggaard/) in second at 1:46.15 and Caiden Bowers (https://swimswam.com/tag/caiden-bowers/) in third at 1:46.18. Interestingly, positions 4 through 8 were incredibly tight, separated by a mere two-tenths of a second – talk about nail-biting competition!

Mary-Ambre Moluh (https://swimswam.com/tag/mary-ambre-moluh/) of Cal led the charge in the women's 50 free prelims, posting the only sub-22 time of 21.94, which is her best mark so far this season.

Sophomore Lucca Battaglini (https://swimswam.com/tag/lucca-battaglini/) of Cal swam an impressive personal best in the men's 50 free, securing the top seed for tonight with a blazing 18.78 – ranking him as the sixth fastest in Cal's storied history. And this is the part most people miss: could this freshman surge indicate a new era for Cal, or is it just a temporary spark?
